Lakeville Swim Community
Driving an aquatic strategy that supports swimming and aquatics for the community of Lakeville, Minnesota.

Lakeville Swim Community is a group of parents and swimmers dedicated to supporting swimming, diving, and other water sports and fitness options within the city of Lakeville, Minnesota, the surrounding communities, and ISD 194.

We strongly advocate that the school board for District 194 in Lakeville drive an aquatic strategy that addresses the needs of curriculum, competition, and community.

Academic Inequality

Century Middle School does not have a pool. Unlike their peers at Kenwood and McGuire middle schools, students at Century cannot learn either water safety or how to swim through the school curriculum. Teaching our youth how to swim along with water safety skills should be part of all schools core physical education curriculum. Drowning is a leading cause of death among our youth and is preventable through proper education.

Competitive Disadvantage

The girls’ and boys’ swim and dive teams from Lakeville North High School and Lakeville South High School are the only teams in the Lake Conference required to hold meets and practice with a competing school’s team.  The meets are “double dual” meets, meaning that the visiting team competes against both North and South separately but at the same time. Not only do these teams have to practice with and then compete against each other, the divers on the teams can neither practice nor compete at the same facility as their teammates.  That would be like scoring a touchdown on one field and kicking the extra point on another field down the street.

McGuire can host diving with its single diving board, but its pool is not deep enough for legal starts. Kenwood does not have a diving well, but its pool supports legal starts for swim meets. Between the two pools, the two teams have one competition venue.

Swimmers in both club and school swimming are swimming in vastly overcrowded lanes, which fosters poor technique and reduced speed. They have 11 – 14 swimmers per lane instead of the recommended 5 – 6 swimmers per lane. For the first time in their existence, the high school teams may be forced to cut swimmers from the roster due to lack of space.

Community

The two existing pools are used nearly full time by Community Education, private club swimming rental, and the school high school and middle school teams.  A component of the aquatic strategy would include building separate locker rooms at Maguire to pivot to a warm water facility that could also be used by our senior citizens and special needs students during the day. The addition of a third pool would enable Community Education to expand its offerings to reach more of our residents’ needs. The swim club could offer more programs with more options for scheduling to support the demands of the swimmers in the community.

WE NEED YOUR HELP TO KEEP THE PRESSURE ON TO RESOLVE THIS SITUATION.  IT HAS BEEN 12 YEARS SINCE THE VOTERS APPROVED CENTURY MIDDLE SCHOOL AND THOUGHT THEY WERE GETTING A POOL.  IT HAS BEEN 8 YEARS SINCE VOTERS APPROVED LAKEVILLE SOUTH AND THOUGHT THEY WERE GETTING SEPARATE FACILITIES FOR ALL OF THEIR ATHLETIC TEAMS.
